Damaged lighting cable repaired after an EICR in Peckham

The property and initial finding

This remedial job followed an EICR at a three-bedroom house in Peckham, SE15. Testing had identified a damaged cable feeding onward parts of a lighting circuit. The damage had interrupted the circuit protective conductor connection, and voltage was present on the CPC serving the utility light and switch, WC light and switch, and rear-garden lights and switches.

Planning a practical cable route

The damaged section needed to be bypassed and the affected part of the lighting circuit re-fed. The nearest suitable preceding lighting point was identified as the starting point for a new cable route.

The cable route required access through the ceiling. The openings were kept to the minimum reasonably needed to route the replacement cable. Where possible, the cut ceiling sections were retained and put back in place, leaving them ready for the customer or a painter and decorator to fill and finish.

Remedial work and retesting

The new cable was run from the selected lighting point and connected to restore the onward supply and CPC connection to the affected lighting points. The remedial visit took approximately three and a half hours and was completed in one visit.

After the work, the circuit was retested. CPC continuity had been restored, the unwanted voltage previously measured on the CPC was no longer present, and the utility, WC and rear-garden lighting points tested satisfactorily.

Following the completed remedial work and satisfactory retest, a satisfactory EICR was produced and issued to the customer.
